This map of Alameda is from 1855.
Notice how little Alameda looks in relation to Bay Farm Island and San Leandro Bay.
It also provides a good view of how marshy much of the area was.
Although the focus of this map is the
San Leandro Bay, the settled areas of Alameda appear as plots of land and
are generally in the area of what is High Street today. There is a mark for San Leandro on Bay Farm.
Also notice the the Bay Farm Bridge. The "Island" portion of Bay Farm
Island was the
non-marshy area indicated by the small portion which appears whiter in the
map, near the San Francisco Bay.
This area can be clearly seen in the
aerial view of 1939.
