The picture left is a close-up view from a map of Alameda County published in 1878.
Notice that Bay Farm Island is called "Bay Island". Notice Brooklyn (now a
part of Oakland) next to Alameda.
Rancho San Antonio's boarders are defined by two creeks - The San Leandro
Creek, which flowed into the San Leandro Bay and Indian Gulch Creek, which
flowed into Lake Merritt, and then into "Oakland Harbor" and then into the
San Francisco Bay. Alameda is still a peninsula at this time. The "estuary"
between Alameda and Oakland had not been dug yet. There is an early train
track seen across the San Leandro Bay marsh, and from Alameda to Oakland
near Webster Street.
