Alameda, CA - Bay Farm Aerial View 1939

This aerial view of Bay Farm Island taken in 1939 clearly illustrates the farms from which "Bay Farm Island" derives its name . Earlier maps show this area as Bay Island. There is a settled area of homes at the area near the edge of the farms. You can also see the runways from the Oakland Airport, which was opened on September 7, 1927 by Charles Lindenbergh.

The picture to the right is a closer view of the settled area of Bay Farm Island in 1939. At least some of the farms remained on Bay Farm well into the 1960s. The farms were sold to housing developers. Later expansion continued using land-fill. Click picture at the right for a bigger picture.
